Mumbai's history is long and complex, dating back to the 2nd century BCE when it was part of the Maurya Empire. The city's name is derived from "Mumbadevi," a Hindu goddess worshipped by the Koli fisherfolk, who were the earliest known inhabitants of the islands that make up Mumbai. In the 16th century, the city was part of the Portuguese Empire before being handed over to the British Crown in 1661 as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza when she married King Charles II of England. The British East India Company developed Mumbai into a major trading hub, setting the stage for its future growth as a financial and commercial center.
