The district covers an area of approximately 2,371.50 square kilometers and, according to the 2022 census, has a population of 2,909,624. It is geographically defined by the confluence of major rivers, including the Padma, Jamuna, Ichamati, and Karatoya, creating fertile alluvial soils across the Ganges, Karatoya, Jamuna, and Barind Tracts.
The region is a vital economic hub known for its agricultural productivity, particularly in jute, rice, and betel leaf cultivation, as well as a growing industrial sector featuring pharmaceuticals, textiles, and paper mills.
