Lodi is an Italian municipality of 45.521 inhabitants, the capital of the province of the same name in Lombardy.
The city was founded on August 3, 1158, by Frederick Barbarossa, following the destruction of the ancient village of Laus Pompeia, formerly a Roman municipium, bishop's seat, and free municipality. During the Renaissance, it experienced a period of great artistic and cultural splendor, after hosting the signing of the historic treaty between the pre-unification Italian states known as the Peace of Lodi in 1454.
In the 21st century, the city is an important industrial center in the cosmetics, artisanal, and dairy sectors. It is also the hub of a region predominantly devoted to agriculture and livestock farming: by virtue of this uniqueness, Lodi was chosen as the home of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milan as well as the Parco Tecnologico Padano, one of the most highly qualified research institutes in Europe in the field of agri-food biotechnology.
