Jena is a German university town and independent city in Thuringia in the metropolitan region of Central Germany. It is located on the Saale river between the shell limestone slopes of the Ilm-Saale plateau and, with 110,791 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2023), is the second largest city in Thuringia after the state capital Erfurt and one of the regional centers of the Free State of Thuringia. Jena is also the 75th largest city in Germany.
