Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. It's about 146 miles long and 22 to 51 miles wide. Jamaica is located about 145 km south of Cuba, 161 km southwest of Haiti, and 390 miles northeast of Cape Gracias a Dios, Central America. Jamaica is a mountainous island with a series of interior mountain ranges, including the Blue Mountains, which contain the island's highest point at 2,256 meters above sea level. The island also has many small rivers and streams, coastal plains, and a long irregular coastline. Jamaica has a warm climate with abundant rainfall and fertile soil. Jamaica's population is over 2 million people, with more than 90% of the population being of African descent. Other ethnic groups include Afro-European, Indian, Chinese and others. The official language of Jamaica is English, but the vernacular language is Jamaican Patois, a combination of English and Spanish. Jamaica's economy is based on tourism, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.
