Map of the historic Hansaetic League cities.
The Hanseatic League (or Hansa) was a powerful, 13th to 17th-century commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northwestern and Central Europe, dominating maritime trade in the Baltic and North Seas. Centered in Lübeck, it protected trade interests, established major trading posts (Kontors) in cities like London, Bruges, Bergen, and Novgorod, and at its peak, functioned as a powerful, autonomous economic force.
