The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) is a decommissioned nuclear facility located in northern Ukraine, near the border with Belarus. It is famously known as the site of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the most severe accident in the history of nuclear power.
Current Status and Operations
Although no longer producing electricity, the site remains an active industrial facility focused on managing the aftermath of the disaster.
Decommissioning: The plant officially ceased power generation in December 2000. Ongoing work includes the safe decommissioning of Units 1, 2, and 3, which is supported by the Chernobyl NPP Decommissioning Assistance Project.
The New Safe Confinement (NSC): A massive steel structure was completed in 2016 to enclose the destroyed Reactor 4 and its aging 1986 "sarcophagus," preventing further radiation leaks and allowing for the eventual dismantling of the reactor.
Modern Management: The facility is managed by the State Specialized Enterprise SSE
