Catalonia is a Spanish autonomous community. It is located south of the Eastern Pyrenees and has a border to the north with France.
Catalonia is made up of four provinces: Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona and Lérida. It has a population of more than seven million people. Catalonia has three official languages: Catalan, Spanish and Occitan. The latter is spoken in a small region in northern Catalonia bordering France and is known in Occitan as Val d'Aran.
The capital of Catalonia is Barcelona, located on the Mediterranean coast. Between the Costa del Garraf and the Costa del Maresme, Barcelona is a very popular city in summer for tourists, both foreign and national.
