Basel is a city on the Rhine in northwestern Switzerland, not far from the borders with France and Germany. The town hall, built in the 16th century with its red sandstone facade, is the landmark of the medieval old town around the market square. The Gothic Basel Minster, built in the 12th century, offers views of the city. The cathedral also contains the tomb of the Dutch scholar Erasmus, who died in Basel in the 16th century.
